It works with newer versions of max but if you need to tweak it, you can use this code.

The script is encyrpted. I do not think Alessandro will allow meddling with the script. You should try to contact with him.

Taking it further
rezoloot · 2015-07-04
would you think about taking it further, like maybe a cliff or natural rock wall scenes creator, there is nothing out there close to yours.
Thanks for the script, brilliant
Really cool script
phonesystems · 2015-02-17
Works ok for me.. good job :)
We sell telephone systems...
ErnsterErnst · 2015-01-14
This is just fake.
Your scripts are full of errors and won't load. Nomatter what version.
Don't borther downloading, its worthless crap.
luxxeon · 2015-01-14
That's a harsh statement. I've used this script several times in 3dsmax 2012 64bit, and it worked fine for me, so that can't be the case.

Hey
Thanks for this awesome rock making piece of magic! Really useful and quick.
Just thought I'd mention that it outputs to myDocuments/3dmax/sceneAssets/images as well as the output folder I specify.
It's no biggy, an easy delete, just thought you might like to know :)
Thanks again

Completely awesome script!
I am sadly getting the same DirectX_manager error as others in here. A solution would be greatly appreciated. :)
JokerMartini · 2012-06-06
Super useful script.
Saves a lot of redundant setup time. Thanks

Same error like others, but it doesn't bother me because it still works fine.
Thank you!

Rocks become pixelated when resized/scaled
AV_2012 · 2012-02-06
Hello,
Your script is really great. However, when I am trying to resize the stones to fit my scene (I make them quite smaller), they become pixelated when rendering. In viewports they look ok. The same happen with or without any optimiser. Any idea?
JamesLittle · 2013-10-04
Which re-sampling algorithm are you using, it can be because of that.or re-size your pixels to mix and match the screen.
spooner04 · 2012-01-25
Seems to be working fine in Max 2012. One thing that might be a nice feature to ad is some buttons for changing out the FFD modifier. So we could set it to a 4x4x4 or whatever. Maybe even make it an ffd box modifier with the ability to change the number of points. Great Script! Thanks for your work!!
langineer · 2011-09-02
max9:
highpoly creates just fine, but attempt to create lowpoly gives me

same error :(
Max 8 Compatibility?
jamesman · 2010-10-20
This script looks incredible. I have good ol' Max 8 and for simplicity sake let's just say I am unable to update. Is there any way this'll work in Max 8? Right now when I try and run it, I get the following error:
MAXScript FileIn Exception
---------------------------
-- Syntax error: at bad, expected
-- In line:
---------------------------
OK
---------------------------
Thanks for your help!
alelink · 2010-10-22
hello :)
sorry but I have not access to max 2008 or 2009 in these days...
I'm working on a 2.0 release of both my stone scripts condensed in a new one, with some useful features.
For this release I'll try to debug the script on older max versions too, please be patience :)
thanks,
Alessandro
2009 issue
kenhennen · 2010-10-15
Alessandro, this is a very useful script. Thank you!
3dsmax 2009:
hipoly creates just fine, but attempt to create lowpoly gives me
--Runtime error: No such macro-script: Smooth
3dsmax 2010: all fine
haven't tried 2011, but by the comment i figure it's fine there
question is, are you planning to release the script which works for 2008/2009?
thank you again. well-thought and useful implementation
Great Stuff
ossosso · 2010-10-01
Thank you very much, really good script.
Just a problem: when I click on "Create" for the "low poly rock" section I receive an error message "Unknown system exception" and it doesn't work; for the "high poly rock" section no problem.
Thanks a lot.
alelink · 2010-10-04
you should not rename the hp rock...have you done that?
gorillamilk · 2010-09-21
How do I make your script a button?
alelink · 2010-09-21
there's an how to some posts below :)
cecofuli · 2010-09-08
Same problem here:
When I hit the bake button it just gives me a very dark/diffuse black texture on the low poly rock. And no normal map generation, in any directory. I am using Max 2011 x64.
alelink · 2010-09-09
hi,
you need to set an output path for the textures, don't use the default one.
coldy · 2010-08-19
First off, great script looks awesome in high poly. But I can't seem to get the low poly with baked textures to work.
When I hit the bake button it just gives me a dark black texture on the low poly rock. I am using Max 2011 x64.
alelink · 2010-08-22
have you choose an output path before baking the maps?
nomanrahid · 2010-08-17
Thanks, i solved my problem.
sir its awesome.
trixian · 2010-08-16
I have not renamed anything. I hit create and then bake. Am I the only one that gets this error? It works fine on the stone placement tool.
alelink · 2010-08-16
have you created the low poly mesh?
EvilReFlex · 2010-08-14
Realy usefull script, thanks for sharing it!
Here is a finished rock what I have made with your script:

wow! what a wonderful color texture :)
aphexx · 2010-08-13
great script! thank you alessandro!
alelink · 2010-08-10
@mahreeooce:
thanks for the detailed explaination you gave to dreamco.
I've developed the script and tested it only in 3dsMax 2011, maybe it's changed the way the smooth normal modifier is called from max 2009 :)
trixian · 2010-08-10
Having problems with baking maps. Hitting the Bake button throws an error "--No ""select"" function for undefined" and disables any further interaction with the script ui (needs to be closed and restarted).
This happens regardless of what renderer i have assigned, or wether ihave the rock selected or not.
This in using max2011 64bit on xp64.
alelink · 2010-08-10
hello,
the script uses the object's name to performs all the tasks.
So, have you changed the name of the rock? should be rock001 if I'm not wrong...please let me know.
this error does not depends by the current renderer.
Maxscript does not perform any operation after an error, so you need to restart the script...
mahreeooce · 2010-08-10
@dreamco
Copy the script (the .mse file) in your 3ds max/ui/macroscripts directory. Then make a new text file in the same directory and paste this in (down to the final bracket):
macroScript RockGenerator category:"aa_stoneworks" buttonText:"RockGenerator" toolTip:"Rock Generator" silenterrors:true
(
on execute do(
filein ((getDir #UI) + "\\MacroScripts\\aa_rockgenerator1x0.mse")
)
)
Save the text file and change it's extension from .txt to .mcr
After this, restart max (in case you had it open), right-click on a toolbar, choose customize (you should already be on the toolbars tab) and find the category "aa_stoneworks" - in that category you should find the script which you can drag onto a toolbar for quick access.
Oh, and thanks, alelink, for this great script. On a side not - it gives an error in max 2009 when trying to generate the low-poly mesh - "Runtime error: No such macro-script: Smooth". It doesn't have this problem in 2011.
TimothyDel · 2010-08-25
The button was created as per your instructions and it worked when I rebooted Max Design 2011 x64 on Win x64 Ultimate. However, every time I reboot Max now an "Error in the application occurred, Max will now close..." occurs. When I delete the aa_rockgenerator1x0.mcr file, Max boots fine. I do see the button actually have black text when booting (as opposed to being gray-ed out when I delete the file).
Running the aa_rockgenerator1x0.mse directly from MaxScript works fine.
Any ideas? Also, would it be easy to have the script run from a pulldown menu?
Here's the aa_rockgenerator1x0.mcr script in the same directory as the aa_rockgenerator1x0.mse file: C:\Program Files\Autodesk\3ds Max Design 2011\ui\macroscripts
Here's the file's content:
macroScript RockGenerator category:"aa_stoneworks" buttonText:"RockGenerator" toolTip:"Rock Generator" silenterrors:true
(
on execute do(
filein ((getDir #UI) + "\\MacroScripts\\aa_rockgenerator1x0.mse")
)
)
Thank you in advance,
Timothy

Hi,
as I stated in the email,
try to put the script outside the max folders.
dreamco · 2010-08-09
I can't create a UI button for it :(
tansi · 2010-08-09
i like it!
